about

Where did we go Rongorongo? Discover a hidden relic from a brief and brilliant moment in North Carolina psych music past. Rongorongo was a psychedelic rock band formed in Chapel Hill in 2007 by childhood friends Ellis Anderson, Morgan Friedman, Sidney Martin, and Nathan Toben. They began playing together as part of a larger avant-garde music and film collective called The Cumberland County Mean Gang. Influenced in part by the esoteric improvisations of The Mean Gang, as well as groups like Can and The Velvet Underground, they sought to assemble a live band that reveled in art rock decadence. Originally, they performed under the name The Pulsating Rosewater Secession (words chosen at random from a Gustav Klimt book), before later settling on Rongorongo. They started writing a wild assortment of songs based on a strategy of rotating instrument and vocal assignments between all members, forging a unique sound that combined elements of psychedelic experimentation with garage rock directness, krautrock drive, occasional tenderness, and an absurd sense of humor.

They played house shows and clubs throughout NC, intense hypnotic performances that featured a sprawling array of sonic textures. The members lived and practiced together in a house known as The Nest, throwing parties and hosting numerous touring bands. They recorded an EP at Track and Field Studios in Carrboro, NC in late 2007, and self produced a 2nd EP in 2008. Each EP had only a limited release of homemade burned CDs mostly distributed at shows. Rongorongo ultimately dissolved by the end of 2008, yet the members continued to collaborate often, evolving into other diverse projects such as The Toddlers, Flash Car, Weller, and No One Mind.

Following the sudden passing of primary singer, guitarist, and songwriter Sidney Martin in 2021, the remaining members spent time digging through the band’s archives. In an effort to preserve the musical legacy of Rongorongo, and the memory of their lost friend, they’ve completed a brand new compilation called You Can’t Go Wrong With Rongorongo! 2007-2008. With a title stemming from an inside joke, this compilation is the first ever public release of any Rongorongo material. Included are freshly remastered versions of both EPs, plus a previously unheard live concert from 2008 at Broad Street Cafe in Durham, NC. Now a whole new generation of listeners can’t go wrong in the strange and colorful world of Rongorongo.
